Pokemon Emerald Walkthrough

Welcome to the Pokemon Emerald walkthrough! In this walkthrough, you should already have some knowledge about Pokemon (pokeballs, etc.) I hope you enjoy Pokemon Emerald as much as I did! Here we go!

Starting Your Journey

When you start off, you are greeted by Professor Birch. He asks you your name and you gender. Answer the questions, and shortly after your character should appear in a small moving truck. Walk out, and get greeted by your mom. She will lead you inside, after she’s finished talking, go to your room (upstairs) and set your clock to the right time.

Then go downstairs. Your mom is waiting for you near the TV. After the short speech, go east to the house next door. Go upstairs, and try to examine the pokeball. Then May will come (most of us know her from the anime) and greet you. She is your rival. After the talk is done, go outside and north out of the town to see that Prof. Birch is being chased by a Zigzagoon.

Then examine the bag next to him, and pick your starter.

Treeko - grass
Good for starters.


Torchic - fire, (fire/fighting after evolution)
Good for experts.

Mudkip - water, (water/ground after evolution)
Good for intermediate players.

Your First Battles

Once you make the Zigzagoon faint, Prof. Birch takes you to his lab. He will thank you. After he thanks you, head north to Oldale town. On your way, you may notice that if you walk in the grass, wild Pokemon attack you. Once you arrive in Oldale, talk to the woman east of the Pokemon Center and she will give you a free potion.

Since you can’t go west, go north out of Oldale and talk to May. You will have a Pokemon Battle with him/her. If you chose Torchic, your opponent will be Mudkip. If you chose Mudkip, it will be Treeko, and if you chose Treeko, it will be Torchic. Pretty straight forward, just attack away. After the battle, head back to Littleroot and go to the lab. Here it is: your Pokedex! Leave the lab, go north, and as you leave, your mom gives you your running shoes. Simply press B and the arrow pad (whatever you want to call it) at the same time; you will start running. Head north to start your adventure!

Go to Oldale again, and instead of going north, go west this time.

Just keep on heading west until you get to Petalburg. Heal up at the Pokemon Center if needed, and talk to the guy in the west most part of the town. He will lead you to the gym, and inside is your father. Talk to him. Wally will come in after, watch him catch a Ralts. Upon leaving the gym, check out the Pokemon mart and stock up on potions/pokeballs and the like. Head west out of the town and a guy in sunglasses will talk to you, nothing important.....yet

Upon leaving the town, head down the stairs onto the beach. Challenge the guy who is running to a battle.

Proceed north to Petalburg Woods. Make sure you have lots of antidotes, as there is a good chance of getting poisoned here. When you first get there, go east and out of the woods to get a pokeball on the ground. Goback west in the woods to have a battle:

Go northeast to fight a Team Aqua fight:

The guy gives you a great ball for beating the grunt. After the battle, go northwest for a bug catcher battle:

Yay, we’re finally out of those woods!

Upon leaving the woods, go northwest around the flower place to find a potion. Then go into the flower place and talk to all of the women. They will give you some berries and the wailmer pail. Then go southeast out of there, and I will go on to list all of the battles.

There were a lot of battles on this route, but all of them were fairly easy. Now you can north into Rustboro City.

When you first get there, heal your pokes, and buy items; you are going to fight the first Gym Leader!

This is a fairly easy battle. She pretty much gets destroyed with any of the starters; with Mudkip/Marshtomp, use water gun, with Treeko/Grovyle, use absorb. But with Torchic, make sure you evolve him to a Combusken and use double kick. Hopefully you win, and good luck!
