Red and Blue Elite Four Guide
The Elite Four is the hardest ordeal you will go through in the game, come prepared. Stock up heavily on full restores, full heals and revives and try to have some ethers and elixirs. Have a nice balanced team and don’t enter the place until every pokemon in it is level 55 or above. This is where you need to finish your movesets and use your tms, so do that. And, above all, switch accordingly with the pokemon of the Elites. This is also where you should use any legendary birds you’ve caught; they will come in incredibly useful. Be unrelenting in your attacks, even if the pokemon is at a sliver of hp, keep using the attack you used to get it there, because odds are that your enemy is about to use a potion.

Although she is the first of the Elite Four and has the lowest levels she is not to be underestimated. Every pokemon will give you a huge headache if not handled properly. The first three and last of her pokemon can be handled rather simply with a thunder or thunderbolt, alternatively, fighting types can be used for the ones with an ice attribute. Dewgong requires a speedy death in one or two hits due to it’s rest, so be sure to pack some power. Cloyster is one annoying little thing, he can confuse you and waste your time with Clamp; use a special move (thunder/thunderbolt is best) to take him out. Although electric is best Slowbro can be defeated with a grass pokemon. Jynx confounds most people as it breaks the water chain, a ghost or fire Pokemon will do quite nicely here however, but make sure to switch out that fire afterwards. Lapras is no doubt the toughest pokemon to go against out of Lorelei’s team, it is resistant and has very powerful attacks, and confuse ray is something to deal with too; this is where fighting Pokemon become most useful, but if you don’t have that, keep laying on the thunders!
Suggested Types:
Electric, Fighting
Overall, she is not to be trifled with; and be sure to bring an ice heal or two just in case.

Summary
Bruno is actually pretty easy to figure out, just make sure not to start out with a flying type. Psychic pokemon can take you through this entire match if you want, and Starmie can give him some kind of heck. Just make sure to watch out for Hitmonchan’s punches, they can take out a good flying pretty fast. The Onixs are pretty easy, most often the one they kill people sending out their pokemon in anticipation; simply surf or solar beam him and you’re through; but do it fast or rage will hurt. Hitmonchan is, like Jynx for Loreli, designed to confound you; but a good psychic or two right off the bat with take care of him before he can do anything, be sure to keep physical moves off him too for that counter. Hitmonlee is powerful, you better have some good defense going or at least some speed because that mega kick hurts; but his accuracy is low, so being lucky or having some double teams will really help you out. Machamp is usually the last out and fairly simple, just treat him like Hitmonlee or (if you’re being especially evil) throw a ghost out there and laugh maniacally; you can do the same for Hitmonlee but beware of the switch; you shouldn’t worry about fissure too much but double team would help, as well as flying.
This guy has power, but double team and defense will help if you don’t have type trumping.

Summary
Agatha is the single most annoying member of the Elite Four, almost every pokemon of hers can confuse you, and the same amount can give you status ailments; come prepared with full heals. Agatha can be taken out completely with a good Onix or Golem or even a Snorlax, earthquake/rock slide combo kills her. Honestly, she isn’t that tough; and if you’re speedy enough with psychic or earthquake the annoying part isn’t even a factor. The first Gengar and Haunter need to be taken carefully, anyone whose face Morty in the sequels knows what a pain hypnosis and dream eat can be, if you ever fall asleep, heal immediately; these guys will also tick you off if you don’t get rid of them quick, confuse ray can be the source of many headaches. Golbat is a pushover, just heal any confusion and you can defeat him with no trouble; use your electric, rock or psychic pokemon. Arbok is rather tame at first, but that screech and glare can make life difficult for you; you can take him out with nearly anything though, earthquake and psychic him to defeat. The second Gengar isn’t as bad as the first, the hypnosis/dream eater combo is throw off, heal toxics (or live with them for a short period) and use your psychic and ground pokemon to finish him.
I really hope you brought full heals, but if your can work with status conditions well then she will be a snap. Also, using a Gengar against hers is entertaining.

Summary
Ah Lance, the last of the Elite Four, and the hardest. I really hope you have Articuno for this one, because it will come in really useful. If you don’t, have another ice type will for those scaaaary dragons. Be sure to have an electric packed in your team too for the fake -dragons and as back up. Ghosts of course are useful here because the eliminate what I like to call “the hyper beam factor”, as well as slam, bite and take down. For Gyarados, do what I do and thunder/thunderbolt him away; pokemon resistant to water will also be somewhat effective here, as he can’t pull out his all-powerful Hydro Pump on you; if left with no other options, try a rock slide. The Dragonairs are where you break out the ice, but rock types work pretty well too; try paralyzing him if you can for the negation of agility. Aerodactyl focuses on physical moves, but a nice electrocution or surf will move you on your way; and Onix/Golem or a ghost will also do well here. Dragonite can turn out really fun, ghosts will have fun; rocks work well too, and you can never forget that ice.
Seriously, bring Articuno for this one, it may feel like cheating…until you get beaten to pulp on your first try.

Summary
Oh Great, this guy; it turns out he got here first, and so, like always, you must battle him. Your pokemon all better be at least 55 if you want to even stand a chance, and you should still have some revives , full restores and full heals. This guy has variables, but he always keeps one thing the same; he always carries a water type, a fire type and a grass type; so having types to counter those is smart. Water and electric are really good here because it can take two pokemon, so you should defiantly have those. Pidgeot can be taken in a second by an electric or an rock type, so start with those; watch out for mirror move and whirlwind (although if you’re a higher level that won’t be a problem) as then can mess you up, especially whirlwind, take it out before it can use it. Alakazam a tough cookie, and is not easily taken out, period; start with a good physical guy and try to kill him before he can use reflect; at any rate get rid of him fast, that recover can keep you awake all night. I will never understand why Rhydon has tail whip and leer, but they both do their job potently; however, a good ghost won’t be bothered and surf/solar beam will dispatch him quickly. Gyarados is the exact same as Lance’s, just a bit more beefy; take care of him the same way. Arcanine, like Pidgeot, can mess you up by forcing you to switch, so try to level up higher than 61; his moves aren’t the most powerful, and in addition to a water type your Onix or Golem can do really well too. Exeggutor is a joke, a ghost will destroy him; so will anything with decent defense; if put to sleep simply heal and resume pounding, speed is good in the absence of type trump to avoid flinching. The starter is the highest level pokemon you will ever encounter in a trainer battle, so be sure to type trump and level up for him. Venusaur will pose a problem if allowed to growth, try to take it out fast with a flying or a fire type; but you can hit it with a psychic too if you have neither of those; all it knows is grass moves so anything resistant will also work; one technique that is useful is if you’re on low hp, attack while it charges for solar beam and then heal as it hits you, repeat. Blastoise has high defense and very good attacks, don’t bother with grass pokemon as blizzard will finish them, keep the electricity coming; any other special move works pretty well too, try psychic if pressed. When you chose Bulbasaur you knew it was going to be tough going against Charizard, and now here he is, at full power; your Onix or Golem will hurt him bad but getting water types with high defense also works, take care treading around rage of course too.
There is no one or two types that can defeat your Rival, you must use a balanced team to win; but if you can defeat him, you will be the elite four champion!
